When you ask a member of our crew what makes working at Geneva Capital so special, 9 times out of 10 you'll get one of these three answers:
- We've got the BEST team. (C'mon, check out that group picture!)
- Our work-hard, play-hard mentality.
- Geneva's generosity - we make a real impact in the community.
Bottom line: this is a pretty freaking fantastic place to work...and people outside our smallish town are starting to take notice. In fact, we've made the Star Tribune's list of Top Workplaces for 3 years running...but what is it REALLY like working here?
We'll give you an insider's view!
Here are the top 4 reasons why we think working at Geneva is so great:
#1. The People
Mark, our Founder and CEO, has always said the biggest thing that sets Geneva Capital apart is the people. And, well...we won't argue. The people that make up Team Geneva are nothing short of incredible, but that doesn't happen by accident. Our management team is very strategic about the type of people we bring on board. We stack the deck with people who are:
- Competitive. Nearly every single person in our office has participated in some type of competitive team sport or activity. At our core, we're driven to meet and exceed goals!
- Hard Working. We're not just here to do a job...we're here to do it well.
- FUN! People who take life a little too seriously just don't fit in well around here.
It's not only important that we can work well together to get the job done, but that we truly enjoy being around each other.
Why does that matter?
- Mutual respect and effective collaboration are where the most innovative ideas are born.
- There's a sense of purpose. Each team member feels valued, involved, and appreciated.
- We care. We know each others' kids by name. We're excited to hear about your vacation plans. We're a really big and crazy family!
#2. The Culture
One great thing that organically develops when you build a team of great people: an amazing culture. "Work hard, play hard" is a mentality we adopted years ago. If you follow us on Instagram, you already know we're no strangers to having fun!
Have you seen our Halloween costumes from this year?
Or how about the Friday afternoon "stair races" we've been known to hold?
In addition, we throw an epic Christmas party each year, hold office-wide bean bag tournaments, and even coordinate several family events. One Easter, we brought in bunnies for the kiddos to play with, and Santa makes an appearance each year. Rumor has it, he likes to hand out mini bottles of Fireball to all the good moms and dads. 😉
Some other fun things you'll see us doing around the office:
- Enjoying breakfast together (our kitchen is fully-stocked with bfast goodies!)
- Shutting down for "Lake Days" to celebrate hitting goals
- Cheering on an intense ping-pong match or participating in hot dog eating contests
- Soaking sales reps in the dunk tank
- Having a brew in the Lounge at an impromptu happy hour
- Educating interns on life lessons like why Office Space is one of the greatest movies of all time. (Did you know that movie came out before some of them were even BORN?!)
#3. Giving Back
Arguably the best part about success is sharing it. When people join our team, they're often surprised to learn how widely Geneva Capital's philanthropic branches stretch in our community. Our main areas of focus are: impacting youth, addressing immediate needs, and putting our resources to work locally.
Several years ago, we created the Community Reinvestment Committee (CRC) to facilitate all philanthropic giving! Each quarter, 3-5 team members volunteer to serve on the CRC. In addition to their daily roles within the company, the team meets every few weeks to review each request received, manage the CRC budget, and quickly distribute allocated funds to recipients...often before other assistance can arrive.
To date, the CRC has reinvested over $1.5 million in our local communities.
Examples of ways we can help are:
- Monetary donations to youth organizations, clubs, and teams
- Sponsoring community events
- Helping reduce financial hardships due to unexpected life events/illness
- Giving of time and finances to area schools and students
- ...and many more!
We also have two recurring monthly events organized by employee volunteers: Community Reinvestment Lunch and Community Reinvestment Happy Hour.
Each month, 5-6 team members volunteer to make lunch or organize a happy hour for the rest of the company. They choose a recipient in need, plan the meal, buy the groceries, prepare a delicious lunch (or happy hour snacks and beverages), and watch as the rest of the company rolls in...stomachs rumbling! Everyone drops cash into the fishbowl, Geneva matches it (x2!), and a check is fired off to the recipient!
In addition, we do a lot of holiday-inspired giving to local families in need of winter clothing, financial assistance, or gifts to put under the tree. We also partner with the United Way of Douglas and Pope Counties on several initiatives including their monthly food drive.
You can check out more about our commitment to giving in the Community section of our website. If you know of a local family or organization who could use a helping hand, let our CRC Team know!
#4. BONUS! Growth. Opportunity. Contribution.
Comprised primarily of "Minnesota Nice" Midwesterners who are true team-players, most of our group wouldn't mention the opportunity for career growth as a reason for loving where they work. We're a green and growing company, and that means there's ample opportunity for career-advancement within every area of our team.
In fact, did you know we've had 26 promotions from within over the last 3 years? Or that 8 of our current employees are past Geneva interns?!
Even better, contribution from everyone, regardless of role or title, are valued here. Through our "Bright Ideas" incentive program, anyone can suggest a way to grow the business, cut expenses, or create efficiencies around the office. The reward for a Bright Idea? A cash bonus (and bragging rights)!
Whew! There you have it...4 (of the many) reasons it's awesome to work at Geneva Capital!
